Group A Key

Group A - Shell taller than wide, lip simple with no tooth, concial, columnar, fusiform, or succiniform, ~2 to >20 mm diameter

A1. fusiform, columnar –Cochlicopa, Columella

A2. succiniform – Succineidae (Catinella, Novisuccinea, Oxyloma, Succinea)

A3. conical - Pomatiopsis

A4. bulimoid, slight reflection, large bulky snail - Rabdotus

A1. fusiform, columnar –Cochlicopa, Columella

Cochlicopa (Pillar snails) have a more spindle-shaped shell with no tooth and a yellowish body. The apertural lip is thickened (callused), but not reflected. Approximate size range: 4-8 mm.

Go to “Cochlicopa (Pillar Snails)” Page for more information.

Columella (Column snails) are columnar and less conic. Some may be shorter and stouter (less fusiform, more pupillid-like, fitting more into group B1 or B2 - so caution.  The left side of the lip is slightly reflected, but the right side is simple.  Approximate size range: 1-3 mm. See https://www.carnegiemnh.org/science/mollusks/va_columella_simplex.html) for image.

Go to “Columella (Column Snails)” Page for more information.

A2. succiniform – Succineidae (Catinella, Novisuccinea, Oxyloma, Succinea)

Snails of the family Succineidae (Ambersnails) are uniquely shaped and identifiable. The very large and wide aperture, lack of reflection, and rounded whorls are distinguishing. Amber snails are best identified to species by observation of external or internal anatomy of the soft parts, all beyond this guide. Approximate size range: 7 mm up to 20 mm or more.

Go to “Succineidae (Ambersnails)” Page for more information.

 A3. conicalPomatiopsis

Walker snails are amphibious snails, more often listed with aquatic species than with terrestrial. The size range of these taller-than-wide conical snails is 5-7 mm and they are superficially similar to some Pupillids.

Go to “Pomatiopsis” Page for more information.

A4. bulimoid, slight reflection, large bulky snail - Rabdotus

The Whitewashed Rabdotus is a notable snail with its "bulimoid" shape and slightly reflected lip with no tooth. It is the only snail this large with a high spire and smooth and white shell with some darker tan or brownish stripes or blotches. Size might range, based on KY by Dourson (2010) from 15-26 mm tall. In MO, Oesch et al. (2013) saw 17-19 mm.
